Before I became a parent, I had already done a lot of work to heal my past. I used talk therapy, journaling, intuitive coaching, and breathwork and I felt pretty confident these skills would be enough to handle whatever would come my way during pregnancy and parenthood.

Well, I got a lesson in humility when my previously well-managed anxiety got substantially worse during my pregnancy. My son’s birth was not the blissful event my husband and I had hoped for but rather a very traumatic one. With the addition of my early postpartum months which turned out completely different than what I had prepared for, the whole parenting experience left me as a new mom in a not good place.

About 5 months postpartum, I remember so distinctly feeling as if someone had pulled open the curtains and was shining the sun in my face. When I could finally fully open my eyes, I saw the truth of the situation — I wasn’t ok and I needed help. Admitting this to myself was an act of self-love and my first step toward building my support network from the inside out. From here, I was able to ask for support from others and was able to receive it.

This was the turning point for me out of the darkest time of my life into the brightest. None of it was easy but it was worth it because it pushed me to grow further than I thought I could. These experiences also made me aware of how parents are faced with unique challenges when it comes to their own well-being and getting the support they need.

Our children bring up things in us we thought we healed and issues we didn’t even know we had. It is really important to understand ourselves and give ourselves what we need so we can be with our children, not from our triggered place, but from the reality of our present time with them.

My work with parents began the moment I had this realization and I was my first client. I took everything that helped with my own healing and broke it down into a daily practice. I am amazed to hear from clients how much their family's lives improve because they themselves are more self-aware, able to manage their emotions effectively, and empowered to ask for what they need on a daily basis.

No matter where we've been or where we are in our parenting, the time to say “I deserve more support and I am going to give it to myself" is NOW.
